Year in Review 2012

The Calendar Year 2012 has come to a close and the time has come to take a good look back at what has happened throughout the year, what I have done, and what I have achieved thus far. I am very happy to share with everyone that the Calendar Year 2012 has been an awesome and memorable journey for me!

The New Year Resolutions

At the start of every year, people usually talk about setting New Year Resolutions. However, do they really remember and work towards these objectives throughout the calendar year? Shown below is a list of New Year Resolutions which I have set for myself at the start of Calendar Year 2012.

New Year Resolutions 2012
  • Graduate from Diploma in Commerce (Business Administration) (Completed)
  • Fitness Management: Weight Loss to Healthy Levels (Incomplete)
  • Commence: Japanese Language & Cultural Studies (Completed)
  • Commence: Paper Crafting Hobby (Incomplete)
  • Commence: Photography & Videography Hobby (Completed)
  • Commence: Business Development (Completed)

The results have shown that I did not complete all of them.
What do you think actually happened?

Limitation of Time & Opportunity Costs
Human beings only have 24 hours a day and they can only do as much as the amount of free time they have available on their hands. They will choose to engage in activities which brings about a higher level of benefit than the other could.

In this case, I sacrificed my time for other activities to pursue new interests, hobbies, and passion such as Events, Exhibition, & Conventions. The days and nights before the activities are spent preparing Photography Equipments, Convention Survival Kits, and producing Name Cards for Networking.

No one knows when a meteorite will fall from the skies and blast you into bits and pieces. It is always better to live a life full of happiness doing what you love than to live a life full of regrets doing what you always hated.
Human beings only get to live once, so live your life to the fullest!

Changing Interests, Unchanging Passion
As time passes by, we will pick up new interests and drop off the older ones which we are no longer interested in.
Shown below is a list of new interests which I have picked up along the journey.

  • Daily Dosage of Japanese Anime
  • Anime Figure Photography
  • Cosplay Photography
  • Daily Dosage of Games
  • Media Coverage @ Events, Exhibitions & Conventions
  • Blogging (Min. 1 Feature Article per Week)

My interest in Japanese Popular Culture has proven to provide higher levels of benefits for me while my passion in both Career and Business Development remains extremely strong and unchanging.

Diploma in Commerce (Business Administration)

At the start of the year, I was still in the midst of pursuing the Diploma in Commerce (Business Administration) offered by Kaplan Higher Education Institute. Pursuing a Diploma Qualification on a Part-Time Education basis while working on a Full-Time Employment basis is very challenging but I am glad that I made it through the stormy seas.

I have graduated from the Diploma course without much trouble and Awarded: Diploma in Commerce.

Japanese Language & Cultural Studies

I have commenced Japanese Language & Cultural Studies on a Part-Time Education basis by sourcing out for the study materials, both online and offline, as well as forming my very own study group.

Learning the Japanese Language at my own pace is a very blissful experience. Having someone learning the Japanese Language alongside with me is a bonus as we can exchange study notes and help each other understand the areas that we do not.

Japanese Anime

I have started exploring and following new Japanese Anime titles and watching episodes on a daily basis.

While I am still following mainstream series such as Naruto Shippuden, One Piece, and Fairy Tail, I have also been picking up new titles such as Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, Mirai Nikki, Guilty Crown, Sword Art Online, and Chuunibyo demo Koi ga Shitai!.

Anime Figure Photography

I have started releasing my Figma figures out of their eternal imprisonment and take photos of them. Figma Akemi Homura is the very first figure which I have released for an indoor photoshoot ever since I first got my Canon EOS 600D.

I am not a professional photographer but will learn and explore the world of photography at my own pace. There will be more figure photoshoots in the coming future but the date, time, and location will be determined at a later point of time.

Cosplay Photography

Being an owner of a Canon EOS DSLR, I have started doing Cosplay Photography at various Anime Conventions organized in Singapore throughout the year. I appreciate the time, money, and effort invested by the Cosplayers to get their costumes and props done for almost nothing in return other than having fun as a form of hobby.

Games: League of Legends (PC)

I have started playing League of Legends, a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game as a form of entertainment after a long and tiring day at work. This game is highly competitive as you will be matched up with real human players and pitting your skills either against Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bots or other real human players.

Japanese Arts Fiesta II

I have started attending various Pop Culture Events, Exhibitions, and Conventions organized in Singapore.

Japanese Arts Fiesta II is a Japanese Cultural Event that happened on Saturday, 02 June 2012 in Singapore @ Dunman High School. This is the very first Japanese Cultural Event which I attended in calendar year 2012.

COSMO Youth Parade 2012

COSMO Youth Parade 2012 is an annual event in Singapore which celebrates youth, arts, and the sports. There are stage performances, game booths, cosplayers posing for photographs, and a grand parade walk around the shopping district. Neneko, a popular cosplayer from Taiwan, is invited and appointed as the Cosplay Ambassador of the event.

This is one of the biggest Pop Culture Event in Singapore which I have attended in calendar year 2012 with a massive amount of content and participation by folks and organizations from different walks of life.

CosFest XI

CosFest XI is a cosplay convention in Singapore. Hosting the Asia Cosplay Meet and the CosFest Cure Cosplay Grand Walk, it is one of the events you must come to with your friends and family.

The event venue is hosted at D'Marquee @ Downtown East, the far eastern reaches of Singapore. Even though the event venue is skewed towards the east, the event participants from all over the island still made their way there!

CosFest XI is by far the biggest and best Cosplay Event I have ever attended!

International Cosplay Day Singapore 2012

International Cosplay Day Singapore (ICDS) is a proprietary fan-driven cosplay and pop-culture convention that aims to bring a slice of American-style convention culture to Singapore. Organized by the team behind The Neo Tokyo Project and volunteers from the community, ICDS is an all-inclusive convention that transcends barriers by immersing convention goers in an eclectic fusion of Eastern and Western pop-culture elements.

This is a very unique and one-of-a-kind Pop Culture Event which I have attended.

KiraCandy School Party

KiraCandy School Party is a light-hearted Japanese school-themed event hosted by the KiraCandy Girls in their KiraCandy Girls’ Academy uniform.

Event patrons can enjoy the food, drinks and snacks served by the lovely KiraCandy Girls, take memorable polaroid photos with them, and watch their cute and sweet performances. Other patrons can shop around for Anime, Artwork, Toy Merchandise, and exclusive KiraCandy items, and stand a chance to win great prizes in the lucky draw.

This is a community-based event organized by passionate folks from the local Japanese Pop Culture Community in Singapore.

Anime Festival Asia 2012

Anime Festival Asia 2012 (AFA'12) happened on the 09 - 11 November 2012 @ The Singapore Expo Halls 8 & 9! Many exhibitors and artists came to set up their booths to offer their goods and services as well as to showcase their latest works while many visitors, cosplayers, and photographers flocked to the event grounds to grace the experience of an Anime Convention!

This is the historical groundbreaking event which shook the very foundations of the local Japanese Pop Culture community and industry in Singapore ever since its first launch in year 2008.

Culture Japan Night (Singapore) 2012

Culture Japan Night (Singapore) 2012 is an annual community, commercial, and industrial networking event organized by comrade Danny Choo and attended by folks who share common interests and passion in Japanese Popular Culture.

At this networking event, I got to meet folks from the Japanese Anime industry as well as fellow comrades from our local community in Singapore.

Singapore Learn Japanese 2012

Singapore Learn Japanese 2012 is a community event hosted by comrade Danny Choo to share his interests, hobbies, passion, knowledge, skills, and experience of learning the Japanese Language & Culture with anyone (including non-Singaporeans) in Singapore who is able to be there @ Jurong Regional Library to attend his talk.

I have learned a lot of valuable lessons about Japanese Language & Cultural Studies as well as Career Development which cannot be found anywhere else in the world

Garena Carnival 2012

Garena Carnival 2012 is a game convention hosted by Garena Singapore which took place on 24 & 25 November 2012 @ Bugis+ (formerly known as iluma) in Singapore. Many like-minded folks attended the event to celebrate their interest and passion in playing games such as League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, BlackShot, and MStar.

I enjoyed myself celebrating my love for League of Legends at this event.
I have also met and spoke to Elliot, the official Caster for the Garena Premier League.

EOY Cosplay Festival 2012

EOY Cosplay Festival 2012 is a community-based Japanese Popular Culture event held at the Marina Barrage in Singapore on 09 December 2012. Like-minded folks flocked to grace the event and celebrated their interests and passion in Japanese Popular Culture through Cosplay, Stage Performance, or simply shopping for related merchandises.

This event gave me a reason and opportunity to visit the Marina Barrage which I would never have thought of visiting.
