The Asia Cosplay Meet @ DBS Marina Regatta 2014 took place on 17 & 18 May 2014 at The Promontory @ Marina Bay in sunny Singapore. It is a cultural event which celebrates the interest, hobby, and passion of Cosplay as well as being a Regional Cosplay Competition which showcases the creative performing talents of Cosplayers from different parts of Asia.

The Event Location

The event is hosted on a recreational grass field right in the heart of Singapore's Financial District, nearby well-known locations such as the Marina Bay Financial Centre and Marina Bay Sands. It is an outdoor cultural festival under the scorching sun, instead of being inside sheltered and air-conditioned convention halls.

Being a Singaporean myself, I understand how every other local J-Culture community folk dislike being situated under the scorching hot sun for long hours. Despite the heat (and risk of getting sunburn), many folks still made their way down to celebrate their passion for the hobby of Cosplay. Just look at that crowd!

The event tentage has limited standing space and folks who are not able to secure a space in the shelter have to make do with being out in the scorching hot sun.

The event tentage is filled and crowded with folks throughout the entire event. Everyone has different reasons for being in the tentage, some are here to watch the stage performances, some to support their friends as well as capture photo and video footages of their performance on stage, others seeking shelter from the scorching hot sun.

Cosplay is serious business and has been attracting more attention from camera lenses and shutters!
It is a good thing so see such interest, passion, and hype surrounding this hobby as it also translates growing interest and demand from the general population.

Videos of the Cosplay Competition

We found some videos of the stage activities and Cosplay Competition which are recorded and uploaded onto YouTube by members of the local J-Culture community. Watch the videos and experience the feel of the event!

Asia Cosplay Meet is one aspect of a larger event known as the DBS Marina Regatta 2014.
In case you are wondering, DBS stands for Development Bank of Singapore, a local financial service provider in Singapore.

Apart from the Cosplay Competition Contestants, there are also non-competitive members of the J-Culture community who made their way down to the event location in their costumes and props. This 'Selfie Wall' is a remarkable location for a nice background and we invited Cosplayers here to have their photos captured.

At the end of every event, I will usually say ..

wa lau eh .. dam hot and tired sia .. leg also beri pain ..

The statement above is written in Singlish, a Singaporean slang which is a mixture of the English Language, the Hokkien Dialect, Bahasa Melayu, and many other languages from the local populace in sunny Singapore. However, when written in proper English language, the statement goes ..

Goodness gracious me! The weather was hot, it was such a tiring experience, and my legs hurt from the long hours of standing and walking about.

On a serious note, Asia Cosplay Meet @ DBS Marina Regatta 2014 is ..
  • International Event with invited guests, participants, and visitors from outside of Singapore.
  • Small-scale Event with a lack of shelter from the Sun (Day 1) / Rain (Day 2).
  • Way too much focus on stage performances with almost nothing on ground level.
